How Polymarket markets resolve
Each market resolves according to its written rules and named source. Most markets use UMA's Optimistic Oracle: someone proposes an answer, it can be challenged, and if a second proposal is disputed too, UMA token holders vote.
Rules come first
The market title is a summary. What actually decides the outcome is the rules text: the exact condition, the resolution source (for example an official agency or a data feed) and the deadline. A price of 99¢ does not mean a market has resolved.
The UMA Optimistic Oracle, step by step
- Proposal. After the event, someone proposes an outcome and posts a bond.
- Challenge window (about 2 hours). Anyone who disagrees can dispute the proposal by posting a matching bond.
- No dispute: the proposal is accepted and the market settles, typically about 2 hours after the proposal.
- First dispute: the market goes back to a fresh proposal round.
- Second dispute: the question goes to UMA's Data Verification Mechanism. After a debate period, UMA token holders vote over roughly two days. The losing side forfeits its bond. A disputed market typically takes 4–6 days to settle.
Some crypto price markets settle from price feeds such as Chainlink instead of a UMA vote.
Known weaknesses
Because votes are weighted by token holdings, a small number of large holders can carry a dispute. In 2026 several disputed markets drew criticism, most visibly a market on whether Strategy sold Bitcoin by 31 May, which resolved NO despite a later company disclosure. The number of disputed markets also rose sharply in 2026.
Practical rule: before buying, read the rules and the resolution source, and avoid markets where the wording is ambiguous. If a market is in a proposed or disputed state, treat the outcome as uncertain.

Open PolymarketFrequently asked questions
How long does Polymarket take to resolve a market?
Undisputed markets usually settle about 2 hours after an outcome is proposed. Disputed markets typically take 4–6 days.
Can a Polymarket resolution be wrong?
It can be contested. The final answer is whatever the oracle process settles on, which is why reading the rules matters.
What is UMA?
UMA is an oracle protocol whose Optimistic Oracle settles most Polymarket markets, with disputes decided by UMA token holders.
